Running with a cold

The change in temperature as we say goodbye to the summer and welcome the autumn can lead to colds. So, the question is, can we still go running with a cold? Many
doctors agree that we should use the ‘neck rule’. If your symptoms are below the neck (chest cold, bronchial infection, body ache, intense coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) you should take time off. If, however, your symptoms are above the neck (runny nose, stuffiness, sneezing, etc.) you can carry on running, but watch out for dizziness, nausea or profuse sweating. If you feel any of these symptoms, stop!

Take extra care when training with anything worse than a minor cold because it could escalate into more serious conditions, such as sinusitis, and never run if you have a fever or flu. Wait until the day after your symptoms disappear and then go for a short, easy run. Wait one to two weeks before resuming pre-illness intensity and mileage, otherwise you risk a relapse.

Hidden Valley 7k

Join us tomorrow at 9h for an undulating jog through an awe-inspiring hidden valley. The views are breathtaking in all directions - a place to be at one with nature. A stony track takes us to an elevated vantage point where crystal clear waters lie below us. Here you have the option of
rambling down to a small secluded beach where you are welcome to wet your toes. The run back allows us to enjoy these natural surroundings from another
perspective, then it's a taste of sparkling seafront before arriving at our
destination for a glass of something cool.

Don't worry, be runny!

Running is one of the best stress-relief exercises. It is so commonly used for stress relief that the feeling many people get after a good run has become a common term, known as 'runner's high'. This feeling comes from endorphins. Many people find that running also reduces stress because they simply focus on the run, rather than the day's stresses. So, the next time you feel stressed out, reach for your trainers!

Virgin coconut oil

One of the lovely things about guiding runs is that we get to meet many like-minded people with whom we share a passion and also lots of interesting conversations.Ingrid from Edinburgh gave us a tip to make our porridge tastier by adding a spoonful of Virgin Coconut Oil.

Available in health shops, coconut oil solidifies if placed in the fridge and melts into a liquid in warmer temperatures. I tried it on my porridge this morning and can confirm that it made a delicious change. You can also add a spoonful to a smoothie or fry chicken or steak in it.

Having read up on this oil, not only does it have a lovely taste, it is believed to boost immunity and bone density, improve thyroid function and take some load off the pancreas, as well as increase energy and endurance. It is also said to be a powerful anti-oxidant.

Not only is coconut oil beneficial in our diet, but on our skin and in our hair. It is also believed to combat Athlete’s Foot if rubbed into the affected area two to three times a day, and at the same time, its antibacterial properties help those with stinky feet to smell fresher!

Well done to Elizabeth and Ingrid who ran in last night's 7.4k race around the walls of Alcudia old town. Both girls completed five laps around the walls in extremely hot and humid conditions finishing in the very respectable times of 35m55s and 36m21s. Very proud of our runnyknowses!

Join us for our Rise with the Sun 17k run tomorrow at 6.30am. It's a steep climb up the asphalt road to the watchtower above, but well worth the effort for the
stunning views  to be enjoyed en route and those that await you at the top. Lush green mountainside, rocky cliffs, blue blue sea ... Then, of course, it's downhill all the way home to claim your prize in the way of a refreshing drink.
